From February 22 to 24, 2023, the Institute of Language, Arts, and Culture at Sakon Nakhon Rajabhat University, in collaboration with Sakon Nakhon Province, Sakon Nakhon Provincial Administrative Organization, Sakon Nakhon Municipality, the Tourism Authority of Thailand’s Nakhon Phanom Office, and the Sakon Nakhon Provincial Cultural Office, hosted the 14th Isan Culture Festival under the theme “Sakon Muan Chuen” along the Huai Sai riverbank at Sakon Nakhon Rajabhat University. The event was officially opened by Mrs. Jurirat Thepa-Arsa, Governor of Sakon Nakhon Province, with Assoc. Prof. Chakrit Chanchitpreecha, Acting President of Sakon Nakhon Rajabhat University, delivering the opening report and a warm welcome to attendees from government, private sectors, cultural networks, faculty members, students, and the public.
The festival aimed to elevate Isan culture towards sustainable development and reflected efforts in preserving, promoting, and passing on cultural heritage as a form of indigenous knowledge. It emphasized the unique identity and traditions of Sakon Nakhon’s local communities and ethnic groups, transforming the intrinsic value of their way of life into “tourism value.” This initiative aligns with a creative economy model, raising cultural awareness and fostering cultural tourism in Sakon Nakhon. Furthermore, the event supported economic policies through cultural tourism and revitalized local wisdom, creating a cultural space for learning that welcomed students, citizens, and culture enthusiasts. It also extended the university’s knowledge base into the community.
Highlights of the festival included interactive exhibits and demonstrations of Isan traditions such as the Bun Phawet, Rocket Festival, Wax Castle Parade, Long Boat Races, and Illuminated Boat Processions. Academic presentations, research discussions, and competitions showcased modern Isan arts and cultural skills, along with stalls selling local products, food, and herbal plants. Sakon Nakhon Rajabhat University extends its gratitude to all government and private sector organizations, community members, and higher education networks for bringing this event to life, celebrating the charm and vibrancy of Isan culture. The recreated way of life and cultural displays left a lasting impression on all attendees.
