“Driving SDGs at the Local Level: “”Area Need 3″” Launches Northeastern Forum to Promote Provincial SDG Index as a Tool for Sustainable Development
Sakon Nakhon – On February 26, 2025, at Sakon Nakhon Rajabhat University, the “Area Need 3” project organized a workshop aimed at advancing the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) implementation at the local level. The workshop focused on utilizing the “Provincial SDG Index” as a tool to assess the development status of each province and to formulate development strategies aligned with local contexts.
The event was held through collaboration between the SDG Move Center, Institute of Social Research, Chulalongkorn University, and local partners. Over 60 participants from government agencies, academia, private sector, and civil society engaged in knowledge exchange, data analysis, and discussion on regional challenges in Northeastern Thailand.
Preliminary analysis from the Provincial SDG Index indicates that the Northeast region faces significant challenges in nine SDG targets with high risk levels: Food Security (SDG 2), Health (SDG 3), Education (SDG 4), Gender Equality (SDG 5), Infrastructure (SDG 9), Sustainable Cities (SDG 11), Responsible Consumption (SDG 12), Justice (SDG 16), and Partnerships for the Goals (SDG 17).
Regional ranking results show that the top five provinces with the highest overall scores are Khon Kaen, Bueng Kan, Nong Khai, Maha Sarakham, and Udon Thani, with average scores ranging from 57 to 61. Meanwhile, Nong Bua Lamphu ranks lowest with a score of 49.74, reflecting disparities in development and the need for tailored local policies.
The index was developed by integrating data from three sources: provincial development plans analysis, national-level indicators, and multi-stakeholder consultation forums to capture in-depth and context-specific insights.
However, the current version of the Provincial SDG Index remains preliminary. Additional data and local feedback will be incorporated to enhance accuracy in the finalized version, which will serve as a strategic tool to sustainably drive development at the provincial level.”
