Sakon Nakhon Rajabhat University (SNRU) is actively engaged in the conservation of plant (flora) and animal (fauna) resources, as well as vital genetic resources for food and agriculture, utilizing a network of on-campus facilities, regional partnerships, and dedicated research.

The university maintains several medium-term conservation facilities dedicated to securing animal genetic resources for agricultural purposes. The Veterinary Clinic provides essential health and welfare services, ensuring the long-term viability of animal populations. This is complemented by the aquatic animal farm and the university’s cattle farming operation, both of which serve as facilities to manage, preserve, and propagate valuable genetic stock for sustainable food production.

This commitment to fauna also extends to wildlife conservation through the university’s connection to the Nong Harn Bird Sanctuary in Sakon Nakhon. This sanctuary functions as a crucial long-term conservation area, protecting the habitats and populations of diverse bird species and other local wildlife.

For plant (flora) conservation, SNRU actively promotes sustainable food cultivation on campus. This project serves as an ex-situ conservation effort, securing diverse plant genetic resources while simultaneously supporting local food security. The Agricultural Industry Prototype Factory further supports this by creating a sustainable pathway from conserved agricultural resources to value-added products.

Underpinning these practical initiatives is a strong foundation of scientific research. The recent new discovery of four earthworm species in Sakon Nakhon Province highlights the university’s role in identifying the region’s unique biodiversity. This research is the critical first step in developing targeted, long-term conservation strategies to secure these newly identified genetic resources.
